Week 12 Reading and Activities

This week please read Chapter 14, State and Local Government Links to an external site.. This chapter tackles such questions as:

How do state and local governments gain the authority to make these decisions, and how are their actions guided by cultural and other differences between the states? What tensions exist between national and state governments on policy matters, and what unique powers do mayors and governors enjoy?

To support this we will have a quiz, and some activities - another iCivics game play on Counties Links to an external site., and an activity to help you learn your way around finding out just what your range of local governments are (their jurisdictions tend to overlap in surprising ways!) and who is currently holding what offices there. Click on the 'Who Are Your Elected Officials Links to an external site.' link in the middle of the page, which will take you to a map where you can type in an address and discover all of the various elected officials who represent residents of that address.

Do you know what each level of your local Indiana government is responsible for? How might you find out? Do some research and share your findings in your reflection this week about the role and purpose of state and local government.
