CATALOG DESCRIPTION:

The first of two fieldwork experiences in approved human service agencies. The student will complete 160 hours under the supervision of an agency professional and a college faculty member. The classroom component will include small group discussion and analysis of the internship experience.

 

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Recognize the operational and organizational structure of the agency.
  2. Demonstrate professionalism by reporting for work on time, keeping appointments, and following the rules and regulations of the agency.
  3. Develop purposeful helping relationships, assess problems, and develop appropriate courses of action at a beginning level.
  4. Demonstrate awareness of appropriate boundaries and ethical standards of conduct.
  5. Provide accurate documentation as appropriate.
  6. Recognize problem areas and identify appropriate problem-solving strategies.
  7. Demonstrate appreciation for self-awareness and self-care.

  • Recognizing and understanding diversity
  • Developing ethical competence

STUDENT’S CLASS RECORDS:

METHODS OF INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY:

This class is an internship, with a distance-learning component.  You will learn from formal and informal instruction provided by your site supervisor, as well as interaction with your instructor and classmates via Ivy Learn.

METHOD(S) OF EVALUATION / GRADING POLICY:

Discussion Forums: Throughout the semester there will be 9 discussion forums based upon readings from the text. Details about the requirements of these discussions are as followed. (14.44 pts. Each)

CHAPTER DISCUSSIONS EACH QUESTION WITH A BULLET NEXT TO IT MUST BE ANSWERED COMPLETELY. EACH PART WITHIN EACH QUESTION MUST BE ANSWERED COMPLETELY AS WELL. YOUR ANSWER MUST BE TYPED WITH A BULLET NEXT TO EACH INDIAVIDUAL ANSWER.  YOUR CHAPTER DISCUSSION IS DUE BY MONDAY OF EACH WEEK AND YOUR RESPONSE TO (2) OF YOUR CLASSMATES.  

Organizational Chart: You will create an organizational chart of the agency in which you performed your internship. You should include brief descriptions of the jobs that each position performs and how they interact with each other. (50 points).

WEEKLY JOURNAL POSTINGS

You will be assigned a partner from Internship I.  You both will communicate each week with each other about your site experience for the week.  You will both post your reflection of the conversation.  Each posting must be at least (150) words.  Any posting that is less than (150) words will lose points.

Reflection Paper (100 points) toward the end of the semester, you will write a reflection paper. Information about the reflection paper can be found in Ivy Learn.

Evaluation (600 points) Performance evaluation to be completed by your field supervisor.  You will also be evaluated based on classwork performance.

You must also submit a learning plan that you will jointly complete with your agency site supervisor. The Activities section of the learning plan must be completed by (week 4) and the Assessment section must be completed by our Final meeting.  

There will also be three Virtual classroom seminar meetings, you will have the opportunity to earn participation points.

MAKE-UP POLICY:

There is no make-up work accepted.  Attendance at your internship site is an important factor in your evaluation and grade, so this should be taken very seriously.  Since the classroom portion of the course is being conducted via distance learning, you enjoy more flexibility in how you complete your work each, so due dates are firm.

 

SPECIAL TECHNOLOGY NEEDS:

You will need access to a computer and the internet in order to retrieve some course resources, and to communicate with the instructor and your classmates outside of class.

 

LAST DAY TO WITHDRAW/REFUND SCHEDULE:

The last day to withdraw from class without receiving a grade of F is July 18, 2021.  To withdraw you must see registration and formally withdraw from the class.  Non-attendance does not withdraw you from class.
