In this activity you will learn about historical context and milieu on the first page, then work to compare differences between the evangelicals who produced the Chicago Declaration and the evangelicals supportive of Falwell's "Listen, America!"
In the first activity, you are asked:
- How does the above description of progressive evangelicals compare with what you learned about the Religious Right or Christian Right in the past few modules of this text?
- Both documents are calling for deep reform of American society. Choose one of the documents or the other and reflect: how are they pushing back against that common milieu shared by most Americans in the 1970s and early 80s when these were written?
In the second activity, you will learn about Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. This could make for an engaging conversation around societal influences and aid in understanding historical actors. You are asked to:

Then, pick at least two significant events that happened within three years before the source was written and explain how these events connect to the milieu in which the document was written.
