This is part one of the three required courses needed to complete the Online Faculty Certification program. Part one is delivered in 6 self-paced modules. Part two will be a two-week instructor-led course. Part three is a semester long Online Faculty Mentoring program.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: The Distance Education Online Faculty Certification course begins with six, self-paced modules that focuses on creating an online presence, accessibility, multimedia, course management and the College's polices and expectations governing online instruction. The program continues with a two-week, instructor-led online course that features application of skills through the hands on process of setting up an online course for instruction.The course also provides faculty the opportunity to experience the perspective of being a participant, an instructor, and a student in an online course.

*IVYC110 SP and IVYC110 IL are the prerequisites for IVYC112- Online Faculty Mentoring program.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to: 

  1. Discuss Ivy Tech Community College policy related to distance education.
  2. Identify the differences in teaching a Statewide Distance Education Course versus a course that was previously developed in a region.
  3. Compare and contrast the roles of online students, faculty, and distance education/instructional technology coordinators.
  4. Compare and contrast the traditional face-to-face with the statewide online class facilitation.
  5. Describe the characteristics of online learners and those of the traditional face-to-face classroom.
  6. Analyze the needs of online learners and develop appropriate plans for facilitating and managing learning activities.
  7. Demonstrate basic knowledge of course management tools and technology required for teaching online students.
  8. Utilize the IvyLearn management system to prepare an online course for instruction.
  9. Create and post instructional and multimedia content into an online course.
  10. Apply best practices for teaching and assessing online classes.
  11. Recognize why it is important to make a course accessible.
  12. Create strategies to enhance accessibility in your course.
  13. Create an online presence.
  14. Plan and manage different types of participation in your course.
  15. Draft your expectations for your students and yourself in your course.
  16. Develop a realistic plan to balance your time while teaching your online course

COURSE POLICIES & PROCEDURES

This is a three-part certification course designed to prepare you for teaching online at Ivy Tech Community College. You will complete six self-paced modules, two instructor-led modules, and participate in a semester long mentoring program labeled as IVYC112- Online Faculty Mentoring.

Special Note: IvyLearn 101-IvyLearn Basics for Faculty is a prerequisite for IVYC110-Online Faculty Certification. Although several IvyLearn tools are introduced in this course, the purpose is to explore how these tools enhance and build a successful online learning experience.

IVYC110SP-Online Faculty Certification Self-Paced Modules

Part one contains six self-paced modules. Each module will need to be completed prior to joining the instructor-led portion of the course. To successfully complete each module, you will have to complete all of the assignments and pass each of the assessments with a score of 90% or better. Self-paced modules are completed in a suggested time frame. There is not a specific instructor assigned to facilitate this course; however, assistance is available by contacting your Course Moderator.

Each module will feature a variety of selected readings, video demonstrations or lectures, and an assessment. Each module should take 1-3 hours to complete.

IVYC110IL-Online Faculty Certification Instructor-Led Modules

In phase two, you will participate in a two-week course. During that time, you will interact with an experienced online instructor who will set the example of best practices in online course delivery. Your instructor will offer synchronous sessions, an example of a video lecture, and demonstrations of discussion board communication plus the opportunity for you to prepare an actual online course for instruction. Online Technologies Staff will enroll you in the phase two upon successful completion of the self-paced modules.

IVYC112- Online Faculty Mentoring Program

You will be assigned a Mentor for your first semester of teaching online. Mentors will complete the following milestones with their Mentee group.

 You will meet with your Mentor in a webinar during a non-instructional week to help you complete the set-up of your online course for the first time.

  1. Your Mentor will contact you through one of the following communication tools: IvyLearn Conversations, Google Hangouts and/or GoToMeeting to assist you with the No Show process.
  2. Your Mentor will contact you prior to mid-terms to discuss proctored exams and mid-term grade reporting.
  3. You will complete a self-evaluation of your performance during the semester. This is designed as a professional development opportunity for continuous improvement and identifying possible areas for future development.  This will be shared with your Mentor as well as the Online Education Institute.  
  4. Your Mentor will evaluate you and have a final meeting to discuss your self-evaluation and the Mentor’s observations. This is a professional development opportunity and not intended to replace the faculty evaluation process. *Other activities may be required.
